PROCESSOR
- The processor card is a fully integrated unit
with a surface-mount fanless Via C3 processor running
at 667MHz. A 1GHz version is also available.

OPERATOR INTERFACE AND
CONTROLS :

|
PERIPHERALS
|
screen
- The Liquid Crystal Display panel is a 10.4" SVGA
device with a cold cathode backlight
|
RAM
- 64MB to 1024MB of system memory.
|
POWER SWITCH
- There is a latching push button IP65 power switch
on the rear panel, which disconnects the battery from
the electronics. This is not monitored by the processor
card and thus the operating system should be shut down
(or suspended) before the power is switched off. The
battery will continue to charge if the 12/24V supply
remains active.
|
floppy drive
- In order to reduce the size of the enclosure, the
floppy drive is external in a metal case. It is connected
to the 5000 via a 25 way cable
serial interfaces
-
Two serial interfaces (COM1 and COM2) are provided
via 9 pin IP65 D-types on the plinth.
|
HARD DISK
- The unit accepts a single 2.5" hard disc, with
a capacity of at least 60GB. This is protected to 100g
(operational) and 300g (non-operational). An option
allows a second hard disc to be mounted in the base
currently providing in excess of 200GB total.
|
LCD Controls
- A TFT display has no contrast control and so the
single LCD control is for the backlight brightness.
This would be adjusted to alter the drain on the battery,
which will then vary by a factor of three or four.
This is implemented as either an IP65 potentiometer
on the base or as a software control via key depressions.
There is a software controlled backlight timer
|
parallel interface
- A ECP/EPP parallel port is provided via an 25 pin IP65
D-connector on the plinth. This can be used to connect
an external CD-ROM drive
|
KEYBOARD
|
Indicators
|
external keyboard
|
- Watertight membrane
with Alphanumeric, numeric and function keys
- Built in Micro Module IP65 pointing device
- Tactile and audible
|
- There are five indicators
embedded within the keyboard:
1. alphabetic shift (on
when active)
2. symbol shift (on when active)
3. external power applied (green)
4. battery being charged (on when active) (yellow)
5. low battery (red)
6. shi
shift state - when active,
alphabetic keys are upper case
- The low battery indicator will light or flash when
a specific battery level is reached. This level can
be adjusted using DIP switches on the keyboard controller
card.
|
- An external keyboard can be provided via a connector
on the plinth
|
POWER SUPPLY
- Power is provided at 24V DC via an AB connector. This
has spare pins, which could be used to provide customer-specific
signals for the internal PCMCIA cards. The power is fed
through a temperature compensated charging circuit to
a NiMH battery.
- The power consumption of the various internal sub-systems
is:
- CPU with: 5V DC only at circa 2A
- hard disc: 5V DC only at
0.18A (idle) to 0.56A when active
- backlight: +12V DC
- keyboard electronics: 5V DC
BATTERY
- The battery is a standard pack Nickel Metal
Hydride (NiMH) providing 10.8V at 3600mAh
|
external monitor
- An external LCD can be connected to the 5000 via
an internal high density standard VGA-style 15 pin
D-type connector. This could be led out of the plinth
as a customer specific option.
PCMCIA cards
- There are internal slots for two type I, two type
II or a type III PCMCIA card. These are powered with
the standard +5V, +12V and -12V DC supplies. As the
product is designed to satisfy customer-specific applications,
there is room in the plinth for a signal conditioning
electronics PCB (circa 165mm by 85mm) and a custom
plinth can be designed to provide signal inputs and
outputs
